## Simplifying an Algebraic Expression

Key Idea: Use the following steps to simplify an algebraic expression.

1. Rewrite the expression as a sum

2. Use the Commutative Property to group the like terms together.

3. Combine the like terms.

Examples:

a. 3x + 2 – x + 4

3x + 2 + -x + 4         Rewrite as a sum.

3x + -x + 2 + 4         Commutative Property

2x + 6                        Combine like terms.

b. 5(x – 3) + 2

5(x + -3) + 2            Rewrite as a sum.

5(x) + 5(-3) + 2      Distributive Property

5x + -15 + 2            Multiply

5x + -13                   Combine like terms.

5x – 13                      Rewrite as subtraction.

c. 5x – (2x + 4 – x)

## The Haunted Answer Key!

Description of Evidence: Recently I made an answer key for my students to use when they graded an assignment on adding and subtracting rational numbers. When I gave it out, students immediately found a major error!

The error was made in a problem adding a negative number to a positive number, so technically it was a subtraction problem.

You can see the error in the picture below.

I made the error because I was in a hurry and I didn’t check my work. The correct answer is -7.8

Goal: I must answer keys that have no mistakes.

Action Plan: In the future I will leave enough time to calculate all the problems without rushing. And, I will keep a calculator handy for checking my work.

Click the link and SAVE it in My Documents. Then open the file in Excel and solve the puzzles.

Email the file to Mr. Fanning (Fanning, Thomas) when it is complete. In your email, make sure you write your name and your partner’s name.

My learning objectives for you are:

• Write equations that follow Excel’s rules for order of operations (PEMDAS).
